Home » Searching by Subject

Many people prefer browsing through a list of subjects to entering keywords or Boolean searches. Find-It! Washington allows them to do this by providing specialized subject headings covering government topics. Find-It! Consumer's list of subjects is focused specifically on consumer protection. If a user selects a subject heading in either search engine, it triggers a pre-defined search and brings up a results list of Web pages related to the subject.

Below is the WAGILS Subject Tree that is used in Find-It! Washington. It has been adapted to more closely match subject trees used in other states. It is arranged hierarchically with 26 top-level headings and numerous sub-headings.

The Washington State metadata guidelines no longer include the subject tag as one of its recommended Dublin Core Elements. If webmasters find it useful, they can use the DC.subject.keyword tag. Another approach would be to ensure that important keywords are included in the title and description tags.
